Congrats!!!

Jacob Cullens

The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public School District is honored to have a student selected to participate in the 2017 North Carolina Governor’s School.  Jacob Cullens of Northeastern High School is among the 600 rising high school juniors and seniors statewide selected to attend the five-week summer program for academically or intellectually gifted students.  Cullens is the son of Barry and Missy Cullens.

Students selected for Governor’s School were nominated in one of 10 curriculum areas. Cullens was nominated in Natural Science. The Governor's School curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and does not involve credit, tests or grades. The 2017 session begins on June 18th and will conclude on July 26th.

Cullens feels that Governor’s School will give him an opportunity to spread his wings and realize new experiences.  He expressed his desire to meet new people and to participate in classes with like-minded students.  He wants to continue his education after high school with the United States Naval Academy and will have an opportunity to attend their summer session for a week, just prior to leaving for Governor’s School.

When asked how ECPPS has helped to prepare him for the Governor’s School experience, Cullens shared that his Honors and AP English classes as well as participation in FFA and being a leader in band have all prepared him greatly for this new challenge.  He is appreciative of being selected for this awesome opportunity and feels that it will lead him one step closer to his goals beyond high school.

The Governor’s School of North Carolina, founded in 1963 by former Governor Terry Sanford, is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program is located on two campuses: Governor’s School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh. Cullens will be attending the East campus. More information about Governor’s School is available at www.ncgovschool.org.
